There are many different herbs for anxiety, and some of them are more popular than others. The challenge is in finding the right one or combination for you, as your body is going to function differently from someone else’s. Different anxiety herbs work very differently in the body, but they all should have the same overall effect, that is to say that they relieve stress by calming and relaxing the person. Some are recommended for use during the day, while others are recommended for night time restlessness because of potential drowsiness. Before trying any herbs for anxiety, you should do a bit of research to determine what best fits your situation.

Some anti anxiety herbs are: Valerian root, Kava Kava, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo Biloba and Passion Flower. You should also check with your doctor before taking any of these remedies, no matter what the form, because some of them may have unintended side-effects.

Ginkgo Can Be Useful In Treating Anxiety

Ginkgo, in addition to its calming properties, is also supposedly great for improving memory and concentration. Unlike other natural anxiety herbs, it has some of the effects of a blood thinner as well, so you are going to want to be careful about taking it if you are already taking any other blood thinners.

Valerian root is a common herb and is even used in some commercially prepared products sold in supermarkets, such as Sleepytime tea. Many people swear by this brand and claim that drinking one cup of the tea before bedtime helps them relax and fall asleep more quickly. The key is in finding the right product that relaxes you, yet does not have the same effect as a heavy night time sleeping medication or tranquilizer. The problem with many prescription products is that they can leave you groggy or disoriented. This is not desirable if you need to be wide awake in the morning or if you need to drive or operate mechanical equipment.

Some people claim that passion flower smoothes or balances out their emotions, easing the roller coaster of emotion that many of them feel throughout the day. St. John’s Wort is said to work on the brain’s neurotransmitters in a similar method to prescription anti-anxiety or anti-depression medications. It has been used for decades as a natural antidepressant, and is one of the most commonly used herbs for anxiety.  Mental health is one of the most important aspects of maintaining good health.

Kava Kava is a more powerful herb that is primarily used for anxiety and insomnia. Since it is said to be as effective as Valium, it should be taken with care and not used when you have to drive or operate machinery until you are familiar with how it affects you.

There are many natural herbs for anxiety on the market. If you are interested in trying them, you should start off with the milder forms and work your way up until you find the right balance for your metabolism and lifestyle.
